Visit Lake Saimaa

Lake Saimaa, the fourth largest freshwater lake in Europe, offers sparkling pure waters dotted with 14,000 islands and ovet 15,000 kilometers of shoreline. It is in the top 5 most beautiful lakes in the world - a winding labyrinth filled with breathtaking scenery and the purest nature. The Savonlinna region is Finland's oldest tourist destinations since the 19th century. In the region you will find a perfect combination of nature, history and culture.

Traveling in Lake Saimaa region

By rental car

In Finland, the distances between cities and destinations are sometimes long. Public transport runs well, but in smaller towns it is safest to choose your own car, especially if you want the freedom to move around according to your own preferences and schedules. Driving in Finland is on the right, and mainly foreign driving licenses are also valid here, with some exceptions.

By train

You can also get from Helsinki to Lake Saimaa region by train. The travel time with train is almost the same as when driving a car. In Finland, rail traffic is operated by VR. The most convenient way to buy tickets is online or with an app, only some trains sell tickets in train. Timetables can be found on the website, app and railway stations. Traveling with train is very safe and ecological. Please note that the Saimaa region is rich in lakes and islands, meaning the railway network is not entirely comprehensive. For some destinations, it is recommended to consider other onward travel options.

By bus

The area is easily reached by bus and at the same time you also have time to observe the wonderful nature and landscapes of Finland. Get to know the routes and bus operators. Local charter bus services also available.

By plane

Fly from Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Savonlinna airport in an hour. On weekdays daily departures. In 2024, we signed two cooperation agreements with different tour operators for charter and part-charter flights to Savonlinna. A Dutch tour operator Voigt Travel (Rotterdam - Savonlinna - Rovaniemi) and German tour operator Zonista (Frankfurt - Savonlinna).
